Warning: Contains Dance
Guess what? I have a dance performance online. If you didn't make it to the show on the 26th, you can still watch my performance. All hail the mighty Khizmet, who made the video!

Today after work, I applied for employment at two different places: a hotel and a jewellery store. I don't think either could be a worse job than what I currently have.

Then I went out for supper with [info]snowy_kathryn. We had sushi at Niko Niko, and then we went for a walk in the park. While crossing a picturesque bridge, I spat on a carp who responded by doing an aquatic somersault. Then Kathryn and I stood under a tree and played catch with a squirrel. He was biting twigs and leaves off a maple tree and letting them drop. Leaves and twigs are pretty darned hard to catch. They flip around in the breeze, and it's hard on the neck, craning our heads back like that. Passers-by surely thought we were demented.

And now for some links.

Kitten has a walk that's all her own: Check out the gams on this kitty!

Siu Ta: Dave Sim (fellow Kitchener resident) starts a web comic.

Homeowner horror: "'My sense of security in Canada is gone' says Paul Reviczky, who learned about identity theft the hard way."

New Technology Could Force TV Ad Viewing: This is the technology that evil mad scientists create.

[Jesus is my backbone]
Duquesne Woman Sees Jesus In MRI Image: Even better than on a tortilla!

Flying the paranoid skies: When is an iPod not an iPod? When it's mired in shite. And check out the perpetrator's story.

Stormdrain: Goth/industrial music. Not too shabby!

Tire Buddha: Bizarre (thanks, [info]gha5t).

You say "evil mad scientists" like there's some other kind.

There are. There are "misguided" mad scientists. And "reformed" mad scientists, like myself. I'm so happy that people have finally gotten over that whole "army of superintelligent animal-men" phase I was in.

Hmmm, I wonder if Siu Ta will be as misogynistic
as the rest of his stuff has become. My ex-roomie
once hosted a dinner at his houe that included Dave
Sim. Sim didn't hate women as much back then.

Jesus appears on the backside of a beloved pet!

Nice dancing. :) Is it just me, or were the white
people not clapping on the beat?

Woah. Dude. Didn't guys from some other religion burn down a Danish embassy for something like that?

They did, and I intend to burn down that dog,
as well.

Yeah. The 4:4 time was totally throwing them off. It's such an uncommon time signature!

I think it would take me a lot of work not to be
influenced by the badclap instead of listening
to the music. Then again, that's because I did
not inherit any sort of rhythm and soul from my
darker-skinned ancestors.

And why do I keep thinking Princess Leia in Slave
Costume when I see that video?

Lovely dancing, your arm movements and poi work are really impressive.

But still, nothing beats the chicken dance...

Hey Shan! Just watched your dance video! That was beautiful and awesome!

You've come a very long way since our days of going to Bodymax for aerobics.... "Elle est speciale?!?" Eh oui! Tres speciale avec des dons et du talent en maudit! (Oh yes! Very special with gifts and damned talent!)

Merci!

I've decided I quite despise aerobics. Not group exercise, just aerobics.

I was really glad to be able to see you dance, even if it wasn't it person. You are rather graceful.

Thanks! I love kick changes. I didn't do my fancy kick change combos, but they'll be in a performance some time. Probably when I dance to more inspiring music. This song was too regular.

I have a few funky songs I've been meaning to work with, but I need to listen to them more before I have them programmed in my head. Then the real fun will begin.

I think I just might cash in my air miles to get an mp3 player. That way, I can practice outdoors with whatever music I like.

Don't forget the little modulator thingy. (Technical, schmecknical.) So you can plug it into your MP3 player, and it'll broadcast over radio frequencies. :)

After reading about your dancing for years, it was wonderful to finally see a clip of it. Very gratifying to see the martial arts influences on your movements.--BDW

Thanks!

And I didn't even do any kung fu in this one. Too bad I couldn't get my sword dance online. It has a lot of kung fu in it.

I'm curious: how do you know what's going to look cool together and what isn't? Can you imagine so well what things will look like? Or is it that it looks ok if it feels smooth and graceful, or do you just try things and if people crack up, not use it in a serious performance? Or something else?

I can't say I've ever really thought about that. I guess it's by the feel. If a move feels dorky, it will likely look dorky.

And there are also a few clichéed moves I wouldn't do, except for comedic effect (like "Walk Like an Egyptian arms", for example).

Movements don't need to be smooth or graceful, though. I've done some experimental stuff which is very staccato in movement, and it went over well.

I'd say it's attitude mixed with competence and music choice. *shrugs*

Yeah -- I don't know what they're called, but those backbend things with pauses are incredibly impressive, and cool looking, if not "smooth."

Anyway, thanks for answering my question!

Also as far as mp3 players, you can get tiny flash ones awfully cheap nowadays, if you only want to use them to practice 10 songs at a time anyhow, and you'd be out $15 instead of $150 if it got poi'd. It's a great idea.

I've never seen you dance before. Your poi work was awesome. I hope you can post more videos in the future.

Thanks! I'd love to post more videos, but I need to have my performances recorded for that. Here's hoping videographers are more common around here than they were on the east coast.

So, Shanmonster...

How do you manage to do that with poi and not... y'know... accidentally die? Practice? The enviable power of non-spazziness? Both?

(Gorgeous dancing, by the way!)
