I'm not certain what style of dance Kanichi (not certain on the spelling) is performing here, but I see elements of break dance, hip hop, and tae kwon do. What I like is how his movements very much reflect the music. Much of the time, when I see a break dance performance, the music is incidental to the dance, with the movements being only beat-driven at best.
If you have a better version of Kanichi's dance, or a link to his website (if he has one), please share! I'd love to see more of his stuff.

This is an interesting juxtaposition of tap and Highland dancing. I don't know who the dancers are, but they're wonderful. That being said, I can't say I'm too fond of the music used for the tappers.

Ma Li and Zhai Xiaowei perform a ballet duet. Personally, I find the dance and music to be overly saccharine, but I am always impressed at how handicapped artists use their disabilities to their advantage.

Languid, yet precise. That's what I think of this beautiful and understated performance by belly dancer Mira Betz.

This is an unidentified dancer at a pole dance competition in Barcelona. I'm not sure that I can do any of the tricks she does. Wow.

This is Tiffany Bisconer performing a water goblet dance. This is something I've been wanting to do for years, but haven't gotten around to yet.
I really need to go buy myself some sturdy stemware....

Argentinian tribal fusion dancer Ëmine performs Con el alma en los labios, which appears to be a tribute to tribal fusion wunderchilde Rachel Brice. Watch for the wonderful descension to the floor.
Dude. I need to figure that one out. I love it.

Ra'asa Naemet Mokhtar is the dancer in today's clip. It seems like standard golden age belly dance until about halfway through when she does a mind-boggling circling backbend. That just doesn't seem possible without unscrewing one's spinal column!

Yolanda "Tongolele" Montes does a bizarre falling down and rolling around dance at the end of this clip.
I'm not terribly fond of her costume, but that's just how dancers dressed around 1949.

Denisse Arias performs a sinuous and sensuous taxim and baladi with the Oriental Orchestra of Chile. I particularly like her backbends in the floorwork section.

I'm not sure what kind of dance this is. Dance without limbs is kind of hard for me to (ahem) peg.
But one thing I'm sure about, these guys are definitely rocking out. I'm very intrigued by dancers who overcome their shortcomings.

I haven't done one of these in too long.
This clip shows Lady Morrigan's entry in the Belly Dancer of the Universe competition in 2006. The first part of her modern tribal dance incorporates elements of story-telling. The second part is just happy as heck. I really like her costuming, too.

Go see. |
